The symbolic, conceptual, and normative aspects of the concept of genocide cannot be understood by reductive treatment within a specific area of the human sciences. The crime of genocide requires certain preconditions, namely, a genocidal elite, a genocidal ideology, a genocidal organisation, and perpetrators. Three of these four conditions can be adequately discussed using the categories and clearly defined concepts of the human and legal sciences. The exception is genocidal ideology, which evades clear determination, as it both precedes the genocidal event and continues after it. When it comes to genocidal events in Bosnia, we have had little success in subjecting the issue of genocidal ideology to scientific objectivisation. What exactly is this ideology and what disguises does it assume over the longer term? Can we define and clearly present its essence, even given the plasticity of the concepts used to describe it? The lecturer will address these and related issues in his talk.
